These data sets explore the number of deaths associated with drug overdose and other common injury mechanisms in the United States. The National Vital Statistics System provides data on overdose deaths related to different drug classes, which can be joined with census population data to calculate death rates and explore patterns in drug overdose deaths over time and across US states. The CDC provides data on estimated medical costs associated with fatal injury through the Web-based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System (WISQARS).

percent_pending_investigation	Percentage of records pending investigation.
percent_with_drugs_specified	Percentage of records with specific drugs or drug classes reported. The percentage with at least one drug or drug class specified is defined as that with at least one ICD-10 multiple cause-of-death code in the range T36-T50.8.
